West Brom condemn ‘hateful and disgusting’ post by suspending ‘fan’ after Sunderland match

West Bromwich Albion has taken swift action in response to an incident where a self-proclaimed supporter posted abusive content online regarding a six-year-old boy who tragically lost his life to neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. The boy, Bradley Lowery, was an inspirational Sunderland fan who captured the nation’s heart with his determination in battling Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma but sadly passed away at the age of six in 2017.

The football club has identified and suspended the account of the supporter responsible for the hateful social media posts, pending further legal inquiries. West Bromwich Albion has made it clear that they reserve the right to issue an indefinite club ban for such reprehensible behavior. The club expressed its appall at the disgusting post and extended sincere apologies to Sunderland AFC and the Lowery family.

The abusive comments surfaced after West Bromwich Albion’s defeat at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. This incident follows a similar occurrence earlier in the year, where a Sheffield Wednesday fan mocked Sunderland fans with a picture of Bradley during a match at Hillsborough Stadium in September.

In that previous case, a judge spared the Sheffield Wednesday fan, Dale Houghton, from immediate jail but condemned his actions as “utterly appalling” and “disgraceful.” Houghton admitted a public order offense and received a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months, along with 200 hours of unpaid work.
