Blues and All Blacks wing Caleb Clarke is considering a potential code switch to rugby league after training with NRL team South Sydney Rabbitohs. Following a challenging Test season with New Zealand where he fell down the depth chart, the 24-year-old is looking to the future and seeking an “edge” ahead of Super Rugby Pacific 2024 and a new era under coach Scott Robertson.
Clarke, who has earned 20 caps for the All Blacks, trained with the Rabbitohs for a few days, sparking speculation about a potential move to the NRL. Expressing his openness to a code switch, Clarke called playing league a “dream come true” and mentioned it as one of his life goals.
While acknowledging that he still has things he’d like to achieve in rugby union, Clarke seems eager to explore a new challenge in rugby league. Despite a strong start to his international rugby career with a memorable debut against the Wallabies in 2022, Clarke faced increased competition for spots in the All Blacks lineup, prompting him to reassess and seek a fresh start.
Reflecting on the past year, where he played only two matches in the Rugby World Cup, Clarke expressed a desire to bring a different approach to the upcoming season with the Blues. Training with the Rabbitohs, a team he respects, Clarke believes the experience will provide him with a new perspective and help him find an edge, reigniting his form on the rugby field.
