‘So near’ – Alan Shearer’s eight word response to Newcastle United’s Champions League exit

Newcastle United’s hopes in the Champions League were dashed following a 2-1 defeat to AC Milan. Alan Shearer, a former player for the team, expressed his disappointment on social media, acknowledging the team’s efforts and congratulating AC Milan. The loss, which included two second-half goals from the Italian side, secured Newcastle’s fourth-place finish in Group F.

Shearer, who was part of the last Newcastle United squad to participate in the Champions League over two decades ago, shared his sentiments on X, stating, ‘So close, yet so far. Well done @acmilan #NEWACM @ChampionsLeague.’

The Magpies managed to accumulate five points from six games during the campaign, with only one victory. The disappointing conclusion to their Champions League journey was compounded by ongoing injury issues that have plagued the team throughout the season.

Co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi also addressed the defeat on social media, expressing gratitude to the fans for their support. Despite the setback, Ghodoussi emphasized the team’s determination to regroup and focus on the busy upcoming schedule before and after Christmas. He highlighted the team’s effort and resilience, stating, ‘We deserved more, but this is football. We will pick ourselves up and focus on Saturday. We still have a long season ahead of us. As I’ve said before, we are building something special here and we will continue to grow. The future is bright.’

Looking ahead, Newcastle faces Fulham on Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park in the Premier League, aiming to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
