The Magpies may be in search of an additional forward in the upcoming January transfer window. Former Newcastle United star Alan Shearer suggests that his ex-club should consider re-signing Brentford forward Ivan Toney during this transfer period.
Newcastle’s forward lineup currently includes Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, both performing admirably this season. However, injuries to these players have prompted calls for the club to acquire a third striker in the January window. Shearer supports this idea and advocates for the re-signing of Toney, who is serving a suspension until January 2016.
Expressing his opinion on the matter, Shearer stated in the Rest is Football podcast, “If I was in charge of recruitment at Newcastle, I would try to sign him. I believe he is a highly talented player and a valuable option. Newcastle needs improvement in that department, requiring an additional player, and I believe there will be plenty of interest in Ivan Toney.”
Toney has an impressive track record, scoring 32 goals in 66 Premier League appearances for Brentford. A return to Newcastle would signify a full circle for him, as he left the Magpies to join Peterborough United in August 2018.
Despite the potential reunion, Toney has also been linked to a move to Arsenal. Shearer acknowledges the suitability of Toney for the Gunners, stating, “With the quality they have on the flanks, he would thrive with the number of crosses into the box.”
In summary, the article suggests that Newcastle should consider signing Ivan Toney in the January transfer window to bolster their forward options, and Shearer believes Toney could also be a good fit for Arsenal.
