Detroit Red Wings losing Alex Lyon may force hand with goaltending

The Detroit Red Wings’ goaltending situation has become a noteworthy topic of discussion, particularly with Ville Husso showing improved performance despite losses. While a frustrating goal in a recent defeat raised eyebrows, overall, Husso has made better saves and avoided conceding numerous goals per game.

The early-season issue of Detroit winning but their goalie allowing many goals seems to have shifted with Alex Lyon providing a positive impact as one of the team’s backup goaltenders. Unfortunately, in the recent loss to the Flyers, Lyon had to exit the game early due to an apparent injury. The incident occurred as Lyon slid across the crease with minimal contact, resulting in what appeared to be a non-contact injury to his left abdomen.

The video footage shows Lyon tweaking something during the play, and although it might be a minor issue, the Red Wings have not provided any updates on Lyon’s condition. Ville Husso replaced him in the game.

The potential absence of Lyon could pose challenges for the Red Wings, even with Husso’s recent strong performances. The team, which has three goalies, had hoped to test Lyon as the primary goaltender, distributing the majority of starts to him. If Lyon is unavailable, it might mean more reliance on Husso, who has shown improvement but had some struggles earlier in the season.

James Reimer, another goalie for the Red Wings, had a notable absence from play, participating in only two games in December after some time off the ice. While having three goalies allows the team to call upon NHL veteran Reimer, Lyon’s absence could be less than ideal, especially as Detroit aims to remain competitive in the Atlantic Division where Lyon has proven to be a reliable presence.
