Former Manchester United loanee Martin Dubravka has shared insights into the unusual circumstances surrounding the awarding of his Carabao Cup winners medal last season. The Newcastle United goalkeeper spent the first half of the previous season on loan at Manchester United, participating in two Carabao Cup matches that contributed to the team’s journey to Wembley.
Despite returning to Newcastle in January, Dubravka remained eligible for a winners medal. Reflecting on this situation, the Slovakian goalkeeper expressed surprise at receiving the medal, considering the uncertainty of whether it would be granted to him.
“It was [strange] but if you think about it, it’s part of the game. I played two matches for them and how many matches was it to get to the final so it was a strange situation to be in, I didn’t want to be in it,” Dubravka remarked when asked about receiving the medal and his experiences of the final.
Describing the final as the strangest game for him, Dubravka explained the dilemma he faced in terms of allegiance. Having played for both Manchester United and Newcastle, he faced questions about which team he would support. However, his loyalty remained with Newcastle due to the extended time he had spent with the club.
“I always say I always support Newcastle because of the length of time I’ve spent here. It was five and a half years as opposed to five months, so you can’t compare. I wanted Newcastle to win for the city, for the club because the fans are just waiting for something special,” Dubravka added, expressing his support for his parent club despite the unique circumstances surrounding his loan spell at Manchester United.
