It has been more than two years since George Boyd, the former Sheffield Wednesday attacker, decided to retire from professional football. The winger, known for his spells with various clubs such as Stevenage Borough, Peterborough United, Burnley, Hull City, and Sheffield Wednesday (2017-2019), has now chosen to resume his playing career.
On Monday evening, it was officially announced that the 38-year-old has come out of retirement to join Wythenshawe Town in the NWC Premier Division. The club is currently striving for promotion from the ninth tier of English football this season. During his time at Hillsborough, Boyd contributed seven goals and assists in 49 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday. However, it was at London Road with Peterborough United where he truly made a mark, amassing over 300 games for the club before departing in 2013.
Boyd’s potential debut for Wythenshawe Town could be imminent, especially as they face Burscough in their upcoming match as they aim to extend their lead at the top of the table. The experienced new signing is expected to attract considerable attention should he step onto the field at Ericstan Park.
Wythenshawe Town is aspiring for promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One this season, and they hope that Boyd’s return to action will contribute to achieving this goal as he laces up his boots once again in Greater Manchester.
