Sheffield Wednesday legend and EFL pundit Carlton Palmer has expressed reservations about Stoke City’s potential appointment of Steven Schumacher as head coach, suggesting that the club might be wiser to allocate funds towards player transfers.
Stoke City has reportedly entered talks with Plymouth Argyle to secure Schumacher as the new head coach after parting ways with Alex Neil. The Potters had endured a string of defeats, putting them close to the relegation zone. Despite picking up two draws since Neil’s departure, Stoke City is reportedly nearing an agreement with Schumacher, who is currently contracted to Plymouth Argyle for three-and-a-half years, requiring compensation.
Palmer acknowledged Schumacher’s achievements at Plymouth, winning League One with a limited budget and achieving a mid-table position in the Championship. However, he questioned the decision to pay compensation for another manager when there are many qualified managers available without such financial implications. Palmer suggested using the money that might go towards compensation to recruit players in the upcoming January transfer window.
While recognizing the potential risks and financial implications, Palmer acknowledged that if Schumacher could have an immediate positive impact at Stoke City, it might prove more beneficial to the club than investing in player signings.
