The Atlanta Falcons, once propelled by a dynamic run game, have seen their offensive prowess decline in recent weeks, contributing to their loss of control in the NFC South division. Despite a commanding performance against the New Orleans Saints in Week 12, where they accumulated 228 rushing yards and secured a victory, the team’s star running back, Bijan Robinson, has experienced a notable drop in production in the subsequent three games.
Robinson, who initially averaged 93 rushing yards per game, has seen his output plummet to a total of 98 yards in the following three contests, marking a significant reduction in rushing effectiveness. The team as a whole has also struggled, averaging under 113 total rushing yards per game since the triumph over the Saints.
Head coach Arthur Smith attributes the recent struggles in running the ball to various factors. He points to adverse weather conditions, citing the Jets game and even worse conditions in the recent Carolina Panthers game, where the team had to adapt its game plan against formidable defenses. Smith also acknowledges player injuries as a contributing factor to the decline in the run game.
Despite the challenges, Smith expresses confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back and close out the season on a positive note. He emphasizes the prideful nature of his players and their commitment to regaining their identity as a smash-mouth offense that thrives on players like Robinson and second-year running back Tyler Allgeier. Smith acknowledges that players have been dealing with injuries, which has impacted their performance.
Looking ahead, the Falcons, with their “prideful group,” aim to reassert themselves at home against the Indianapolis Colts, seeking to break a two-game losing streak and revive their once-successful run game. Smith remains optimistic about the team’s resilience and determination to overcome challenges.
