Auburn has secured the commitment of highly touted EDGE player Jamonta Waller for their 2024 recruiting class. Waller, ranked among the top 50 players nationally by the 247Sports rating system, initially pledged to the Florida Gators but later changed his commitment to Auburn.
In his junior season, Waller showcased impressive stats, recording 106 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 240 pounds, he primarily plays the EDGE position.
Hailing from Picayune Memorial High School in Mississippi, Waller’s recruitment journey saw him committed to Florida from July 2023 to November. However, Auburn’s persistent pursuit and two visits in September and October convinced him to flip his commitment on November 11.
Waller’s recruitment was highly competitive, receiving offers from 11 different SEC schools. Notably, his strengths lie in his ability to maneuver around offensive tackles with agility and speed during pass rushes. Additionally, he excels in open-field situations, whether chasing down ball carriers or defending against passes.
Despite being labeled as an undersized outside linebacker, Waller compensates with elite athleticism. While he cannot change his height, there is potential for him to add more weight to enhance his overall performance.
The 2024 Auburn Commitment List and Evaluations highlight Waller’s skills, emphasizing his coordination of hands and feet to fend off interior offensive linemen during running plays. His versatility extends to tracking down mobile quarterbacks and playing coverage, setting him apart from typical edge rushers.
Waller’s commitment to Auburn is seen as a significant achievement for the Tigers, marking another step towards their competitiveness for SEC titles under coach Freeze.
