Samuel Girard has returned to the Colorado Avalanche after an absence of nearly a month. The defenseman participated in the team’s morning skate in preparation for a game against the Ottawa Senators. His return follows his entry into the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program, a decision that was announced by the league on November 24.
Girard, in a statement released on the same day, revealed that he sought assistance for severe anxiety and depression. Acknowledging the importance of mental health, he expressed his proactive decision to address untreated mental health issues that had led to alcohol abuse. In a statement from his agency, CAA, Girard urged others to speak up and seek help if needed, expressing gratitude to his wife, family, friends, the club, teammates, and fans for their patience, understanding, and ongoing support.
The update also mentioned the presence of Cale Makar, who had missed the past three games due to a lower-body injury, and Andrew Cogliano, absent from the last game with an undisclosed injury, both participating in the team’s morning skate on Thursday.
