Wayne Carlisle has parted ways with Rotherham United just over a week after stepping down from his role as caretaker manager. The former Northern Ireland midfielder joined the club from Exeter City under the management of Matt Taylor. Carlisle assumed the caretaker manager position when Taylor was sacked on November 13 and oversaw four matches, which included a draw against Leeds United and Birmingham City, and two losses.
Despite not securing a victory during his caretaker tenure, Carlisle handled the situation with dignity. After the game at St Andrew’s, he returned home to Devon, fully anticipating a new manager would be in charge for the next fixture against West Bromwich Albion, and recognizing that his services might not be required.
Rotherham United expressed their gratitude to Wayne Carlisle for his unwavering commitment and professionalism during his time at the club, especially for his contribution while leading the first team in recent weeks. The departure is described as “mutual consent,” and considering Carlisle’s family circumstances, it seems a logical decision for all parties involved.
Following Nathan Jones’ rejection of the job after attending the Birmingham game, it took another week for Leam Richardson to be appointed as the new coach. Carlisle’s departure allows him to explore new opportunities, possibly reuniting with Matt Taylor, who is now at League One club Bristol Rovers.
While Richardson initially expressed the intention to give existing coaches a chance, he quickly appointed former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United assistant coach Rob Kelly to his staff. As for Taylor, who took over at Bristol Rovers on December 1, he has yet to appoint any staff of his own. However, it is expected that first-team coach Dan Green and goalkeeping coach Scott Brown, who both worked with Taylor at Exeter, will remain at the New York Stadium.
