Charlton Athletic set for transfer disappointment as Crystal Palace decision looms

Charlton Athletic is poised to compete with Championship teams in January for the loan signing of Crystal Palace midfielder Jack Wells-Morrison. While Charlton has expressed previous interest in the player, it appears that he is now likely to join a Championship side on loan next month, as reported by Darren Witcoop of the Sunday Mirror. The Eagles are open to allowing the youngster to go out on loan, and several unspecified second-tier clubs have shown interest.

Despite not having made a senior appearance for Crystal Palace, Wells-Morrison’s performances for the U-21s have caught the attention of various Championship and League One clubs, including Charlton, who have approached Palace regarding a potential move in January. The 18-year-old, capped 10 times at England U-18 level, has been with Palace since the age of six and has progressed through the ranks of the club’s academy. With over 50 games in Premier League 2, he has been a consistent performer at various youth levels.

Wells-Morrison, an England youth international, captained Palace’s development squad last season and was included in the first-team squad for a Carabao Cup match against Plymouth Argyle earlier in the current campaign, although he did not feature in the game. According to the latest update from Witcoop on Twitter, Crystal Palace is willing to send the highly-rated teenager on loan in January. Charlton is among the League One clubs that had previously attempted a loan offer, but Championship clubs are also now in contention for his signature.

Notably, Charlton’s interest in Wells-Morrison dates back almost two years, as reported by TEAMtalk, when the player was 17 years old and under the management of Patrick Vieira at the time.
