Linebacker Tanner Cadwallader has committed to two more years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, as the team actively seeks to maintain its defensive lineup from the previous season. The 2020 CFL Draft fourth-round selection, initially entering free agency in February, has opted to re-sign with Winnipeg, contributing to the team’s focus on continuity.
Throughout his three seasons, Cadwallader has established himself as a crucial special teams player, boasting impressive statistics with 38 special teams tackles, four defensive tackles, and a forced fumble, all accomplished without missing a single game. In 2023 alone, Cadwallader recorded 16 special teams tackles, highlighting his consistent presence on the field.
Joining Cadwallader in extending his tenure with the Blue Bombers is cornerback Deatrick Nichols, who has signed a two-year extension. Nichols, a significant asset since joining the team in 2021, has played in 47 regular-season games, accumulating 126 defensive tackles, one sack, four interceptions, and a forced fumble. His outstanding contributions have earned him CFL All-Star honors twice, solidifying his position as a key player in the league.
The Blue Bombers’ commitment to roster stability is evident with five re-signings since the start of the off-season, emphasizing the team’s strategic approach to player retention. This focus on stability and continuity, particularly in the defensive unit, reflects the team’s preparation for the upcoming season.
With these recent contract extensions for Cadwallader and Nichols, the Blue Bombers aim to fortify their defensive backbone, ensuring the presence of seasoned and reliable players as they gear up for the challenges of the next season.
