Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna has disclosed that the club is poised to lose promising attacking talent Dane Scarlett in January, as Tottenham Hotspur is considering recalling the youngster from his loan stint.
Scarlett joined Portman Road at the start of the season on a year-long loan but has made minimal impact on Ipswich’s performance, accumulating just 147 minutes in the Championship across 12 appearances. The Spurs academy product has not scored any goals for Ipswich in any competition and hasn’t started a single match under McKenna since his arrival in the summer.
During a pre-match press conference leading up to Ipswich’s significant clash with Leicester City, McKenna acknowledged that discussions with Tottenham are ongoing. He expressed that it seems highly likely Scarlett will be recalled, citing injury concerns in Tottenham’s attacking lineup. McKenna stated, “There are conversations with Tottenham at the moment. I think it looks very likely that he’ll be recalled.”
Tottenham is reportedly facing injury issues in their attacking department, compounded by Son Heung-min’s upcoming participation in the Asian Cup at the beginning of January. McKenna indicated that discussions over the past few days suggest a substantial chance of Scarlett being recalled from the start of January.
Scarlett, once hailed as a significant prospect in Tottenham’s academy, received praise from former manager Jose Mourinho, who described him as a “diamond.” According to Salary Sport, Scarlett’s current weekly wage is £12,000, though the distribution of these wages between Ipswich Town and Tottenham remains unclear.
From the writer’s perspective, the decision to recall Scarlett appears to be in the best interest of all parties involved. With minimal playing time at Portman Road, Scarlett’s development could suffer in the long run. McKenna mentioned Spurs’ injury concerns as the reason for the potential recall, although the writer suggests that Scarlett’s lack of involvement with Ipswich is likely a key factor in Tottenham’s decision.
