Stoke City secured a 3-1 victory against Birmingham City at St Andrew’s, a match that concluded with Wayne Rooney expressing concerns about his players’ pride. However, both managers found common ground in acknowledging the significance of certain “non-negotiables” that shaped Stoke’s success. Steven Schumacher, who took charge after Alex Neil’s departure, highlighted the positive impact of these principles, with Romelle Donovan’s cameo being the only downside.
Despite Stoke’s nine-game winless streak before Schumacher’s arrival, the team earned four points in his first two games, including the recent triumph marked by a lively performance. Schumacher praised his players’ application of the game plan and acknowledged the challenge posed by Birmingham City’s strong attacking lineup. While pleased with the win, he pointed out the only setback – Donovan’s skillful play leading to Birmingham’s goal – but emphasized the team’s gradual progress and building process.
Schumacher recognized the existing talent in the squad and attributed their previous struggles to a lack of cohesion. He emphasized instilling basic ground rules, non-negotiable expectations, and a clear style of play, both with and without the ball, to bring about positive changes.
In contrast, Wayne Rooney expressed frustration and disappointment with his team’s lackluster performance, questioning the players’ pride and effort. Despite acknowledging small steps of improvement in recent weeks, Rooney found the overall display unacceptable. He singled out Romelle Donovan as a positive example, praising the 17-year-old’s character, attitude, and eagerness to contribute when he came on as a substitute. Rooney took responsibility for the team’s shortcomings and recognized the fans’ frustration while urging his players to give more and meet the expectations set for them.
