Wolverhampton Wanderers secured another positive festive outcome with a convincing win over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite the victory, Brentford’s manager, Thomas Frank, candidly informed Nathan Collins that he had experienced his worst match ever during the 4-1 defeat against his former club, Wolves.
Collins, who had arguably one of his best performances for Wolves, left Molineux to join Brentford in June. Unfortunately, in the recent match, he contributed to his team’s downfall with two costly errors, providing Wolves with goals through poor passes.
Acknowledging Collins’s tough evening, Frank mentioned that he had shared a lighthearted moment with the player, assuring him that it couldn’t get worse than this. Despite the setbacks, Frank expressed confidence in Collins’s positive contributions throughout the season and expected him to bounce back.
Brentford’s defensive lapses allowed Wolves to capitalize, with Hwang Hee-chan scoring after a misplaced backpass from Collins. Despite Brentford pulling one back through Yoane Wissa, defensive mistakes, including another from Collins, led to Wolves securing a comprehensive victory.
Wolves’ manager, Gary O’Neil, expressed satisfaction with the result, highlighting the team’s ability to punish their opponents despite not having extensive ball control. The win completed a festive double for Wolves, following their Christmas Eve triumph over Chelsea, and marked their first success in London in 15 attempts.
Frank remained optimistic about Brentford’s future, emphasizing the club’s character and the importance of staying calm amidst a challenging run of poor results. Despite the defeat, Brentford found themselves just four points above the relegation zone, prompting Frank to underscore the need to believe in the team’s work and processes.
O’Neil praised the enthusiastic support from the travelling fans and acknowledged the strong connection with them. He expressed gratitude for the fans’ unwavering support and recognized that positive results, such as the recent 4-1 victories, contributed to a positive atmosphere over the festive period.
