Agreed Chelsea transfer to be announced today after Blues defender advises midfield move
Chelsea has reportedly arranged a loan deal for their summer signing, Alex Matos, sending him to Huddersfield Town for the remainder of the season, as per various sources.
Matos, who joined Chelsea in July after his contract with Norwich City expired, initially found himself in Chelsea’s academy. However, he made his first-team debut in October under the management of Mauricio Pochettino. While he has been on the bench and featured in a Carabao Cup game in November, it seems unlikely that he would see much playing time if he stayed at Chelsea.
Considering Matos’s development, the club has decided that a loan move for the next six months would be beneficial for him. According to reports from the Daily Telegraph and The Athletic, Chelsea has reached an agreement with Huddersfield for Matos to join the Championship side. The announcement is expected on Wednesday, following Matos’s travel to West Yorkshire.
The Athletic reveals that Matos sought advice from Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, who spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Huddersfield, before finalizing the move. Matos will remain under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026, providing him with several years to establish himself.
Notably, Matos did not make his senior debut for Norwich before joining Chelsea, making Huddersfield the first club to utilize him in the Championship.
Chelsea already has several prospects on loan in the Championship, including Bashir Humphreys at Swansea City, Cesare Casadei at Leicester City, Omari Hutchinson at Ipswich Town, and Mason Burstow at Sunderland. The club hopes that these loan moves will help their players develop into more promising prospects.
For Matos, The Athletic suggests the possibility of another full-season loan next season, though the destination is yet to be determined. Despite competition from other Championship clubs for Matos’s services in the current transfer window, Chelsea opted for the loan arrangement with Huddersfield.
