Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco might find himself facing financial repercussions due to the team’s success in Week 18. The Browns, having secured the number five playoff seed in the AFC after their Week 17 victory against the New York Jets, are reportedly planning to rest their starters in the upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals, as it won’t impact their playoff seeding.
This decision could have financial implications for Flacco. The quarterback signed a one-year deal with incentives, potentially totaling up to $2.5 million, to play for the Browns this season. One of the incentives includes earning $75,000 for every regular-season game he starts that results in a Browns win. If the Browns choose to rest Flacco and other starters for Week 18, he would miss out on the $75,000 incentive for that game.
Even if Flacco starts but other key players are rested, the team’s chances of winning against the Bengals could be diminished. Flacco has found himself in this situation ironically by winning his previous four starts, three of which fell under the incentive-laden contract.
Many argue that, considering Flacco’s contribution in leading the Browns to the playoffs, the team should honor the incentive for Week 18 regardless of whether he plays or not. Granting Flacco the $75,000 would be seen as a generous bonus, acknowledging his role in fulfilling the team’s expectations outlined in the contract.
