Charlton Athletic is delighted to announce the loan signing of creative midfielder Lewis Fiorini from Manchester City, with the loan deal extending until the end of the season. This marks Charlton’s second signing of the day, following Tyreeq Bakinson’s loan arrival from Sheffield Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Fiorini has a history of working with Head Coach Michael Appleton at Lincoln City and Blackpool in the Championship. Additionally, he has earned caps for Scotland at various youth levels, including U16, U17, U19, and U21.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Fiorini stated, “I’m buzzing to join Charlton. It is a big club, and obviously having worked with the gaffer [Michael Appleton] before, the move was attractive to me. He gave me my first games in English football. He made me feel confident and put his trust in me, which as a player is everything you want – a manager who believes in you and trusts you.”
Appleton, equally excited to collaborate with Fiorini for the third time, praised the midfielder’s talent. He highlighted Fiorini’s ability to receive the ball on his back foot and play forward, emphasizing his contribution to bringing creativity to the midfield. Describing Fiorini as a top-class character with a bit of a nasty side, Appleton commended the player’s qualities.
Fiorini, a Manchester native, joined Manchester City’s youth system at the age of seven and progressed through the ranks. He made appearances for Man City’s U21s in the EFL Trophy during the 2019/20 season. His first taste of senior football came during the 2020/21 campaign, with a successful loan spell at NAC Breda in the Netherlands, scoring five goals and providing four assists. His impressive performances led to a new five-year deal with Manchester City in the summer of 2021.
During the 2021/22 season, Fiorini excelled under Appleton at Lincoln, contributing six goals and four assists in 39 League One appearances. He also featured 13 times for Blackpool in the Championship last term.
