Sheffield Wednesday has witnessed two player departures since the commencement of the January transfer window. First, Blackburn Rovers recalled John Buckley after a lackluster loan spell, featuring only 13 times in the Championship and undergoing shoulder surgery. Following this, the Owls loaned midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson to League One’s Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the season.
Similar to Buckley, Bakinson had a peripheral role, making just eight appearances in the Championship this season. His departure opens up a spot in an already congested midfield department. Bakinson, who joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer before last season, played a crucial role in the promotion-winning campaign, contributing with a goal and an assist in 26 appearances.
Now 25 years old, Bakinson faces a crucial juncture in his career as his contract with Sheffield Wednesday expires at the end of this season. Journalist Dom Howson expressed disappointment about the situation, particularly referencing a November 2022 game against Southampton. Bakinson started the Carabao Cup Round of 16 match, where Wednesday, a Championship side, eventually lost to Premier League opposition on penalties.
The loan move to League One with Charlton Athletic provides Bakinson an opportunity to secure more playing time. If he can make a positive impact with Charlton, who are currently facing a challenging run, there is potential for him to extend his stay at Hillsborough. However, failure to impress may lead to Bakinson becoming a free agent next summer, marking a crucial crossroads in his career.
Despite the challenges, Bakinson, acknowledged for his abilities, might just need a consistent run of games to regain his form. His new team, Charlton, is set to face Port Vale in League One, while Sheffield Wednesday is scheduled to play against Cardiff City in the FA Cup.
