Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, is aiming to bolster his attacking department before the January transfer window closes, and he is allegedly interested in signing a winger this winter.
According to the Sheffield Star, Ipswich are considering a move for versatile Sheffield Wednesday forward Marvin Johnson this month and have spoken with the Owls about a potential transfer as the Tractor Boys want to add depth to their left-hand side.
Former head coach Xisco Munoz left the 33-year-old out in the cold at Hillsborough, as he was not enrolled in the Spaniard’s Championship squad. Nevertheless, the experienced
Danny Rohl pulled the attacker back into the fold in October, and he made his first appearance of the campaign in early November.
Johnson has since scored three goals and provided two assists in just 13 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday in all competitions, with three of his goals coming in his past three games.
The former Middlesbrough player was out of contract at the end of last season when the Owls were promoted back to the Championship, and the Sheffield Star claimed in the summer that McKenna wanted to bring Johnson to Portman Road.
Johnson did, however, sign a new contract with Wednesday in July, committing to the newly promoted club for an unspecified period of time. Nonetheless, it appears that Ipswich Town have renewed their interest in the winger.
Ipswich Town have also been connected with a move for Blackburn Rovers centre-forward Sam Gallagher this week, with journalist Nick Mashiter saying the Blues made two unsuccessful approaches worth up to £1.5 million for the 28-year-old.
Writer’s perspective
Given McKenna’s desire to sign Johnson over the summer, the new rumor that the club has revived their interest in the 33-year-old may be fairly accurate.
However, it will be intriguing to see whether the player himself wishes to relocate to Portman Road. Johnson is currently playing some of his finest football in recent seasons and will most likely be a backup option to Nathan Broadhead and Wes Burns at Ipswich, so the wideout must weigh what is most important to him at this time before making a decision.
