The Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel earlier this month following two consecutive losing seasons. Fans had a divided reaction to the sacking, and a shortlist of contenders immediately emerged.
Indeed, the Titans chose Brian Callahan, the former offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. This will be Callahan’s first head coaching position, but he is the son of great coach Bill Callahan and has worked with some of the game’s brightest minds.

Brian Callahan is the son of Bill Callahan, a highly regarded offensive line coach in the NFL. The Titans’ offensive line was historically terrible in 2023, so hiring a seasoned coach would be critical.
Brian’s closeness with his father should also help him adjust to being a first-year head coach. Brian will most likely rely on his father’s connections to assemble a group of seasoned instructors. Callahan was also a member of some of the top offensive coaching staffs in Denver and Cincinnati, so anticipate some of those coaches to appear in Nashville.
Callahan also has connections with a few of free agents that should be of interest to the Titans this offseason. Callahan has spent multiple seasons with wide receiver Tee Higgins and tackle Jonah Williams, both of whom are set to leave.
Will Levis is expected to remain the Tennessee Titans’ quarterback for the foreseeable future. Would you prefer have a defensive or offensive coach oversee his development? Of course, defensive coaches have also produced quarterbacks, but an offensive-minded head coach provides the team with two coaches who can help the quarterback.
Callahan played a key role in the development of Joe Burrow, who has grown into one of the league’s brightest players. It’s difficult to view that as anything other than a
positive for Callahan’s candidacy.
In 2023, only the Washington Commanders passed the ball more than the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2023, the Bengals threw the ball on 63.5% of offensive plays, compared to 55.7% for the Tennessee Titans. While Callahan did not call the plays, he was crucial in developing the game plan and was well-regarded in Cincinnati.
The Titans have traditionally been a ground-and-pound team that has battled to fit into the contemporary NFL. The club hasn’t scored 30 points in a game in two years. With Callahan at the lead in Nashville, that will change.
