Newcastle United transfers: The club’s hierarchy met ahead of the final days of the January transfer window.
Newcastle United are facing a critical last few days of the January transfer window, despite only one major departure thus far.
Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley teased a meeting with the club’s leadership on Instagram this week, posting a photo of the Alnwick Castle dining room with the caption: “It’s wonderful to be back at the glorious Alnwick. 🖤🤍.”
Alnwick Castle, located 34 miles north of Newcastle, is currently closed to the public but has been used by Newcastle’s owners to hold important discussions about sponsorship, money, strategy, and transfers. Such discussions from last season were included in Amazon’s ‘We Are Newcastle United’ documentary.
Along with Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund governor and Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has been in the area this week, where important decisions will be taken. The transfer deadline is on February 1.
Newcastle currently sits 10th in the Premier League rankings, having signed no first-team players this transfer window. Javier Manquillo, the club’s only senior departure, has signed for Celta Vigo on a free transfer.
However, in recent weeks, there has been an increase in transfer links, notably for exits. Kieran Trippier has been extensively linked with a move to Bayern Munich, but interest has since cooled, while Miguel Almiron has sparked interest from the Saudi Pro League, with an agreement in place with Al Shabab, albeit the player prefers to stay on Tyneside.
Callum Wilson has been connected with a number of teams, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, and AC Milan. Captain Jamaal Lascelles has also sparked attention from Turkish club Besiktas.
In order to make any substantial signings this transfer window, Newcastle will most likely have to sell a player.
After losing Kalvin Phillips to West Ham United, Everton’s Amadou Onana has emerged as a target for the Magpies, according to The Telegraph. The Toffees signed Onana for £33 million from Lille in 2022, but they may be tempted to cash in and raise funds after incurring two profit and sustainability fines and a 10-point deduction this season.
Another side under PSR pressure is Nottingham Forest, whose £42 million purchase Morgan Gibbs-White has sparked interest from Newcastle as they aim to strengthen their midfield options. Each player represents a unique midfield option, and a move for them may be contingent on which player departs Newcastle.
