FRISCO – Micah Parsons is the type of guy that teams should trade for, not away, as we constantly say. But it doesn’t mean we can’t entertain ourselves with some Dallas Cowboys hypotheticals… And the concept of a deal with the Chicago Bears for Parsons, with Dallas receiving the No. 1 selection to use on USC standout quarterback Caleb Williams, is… fun! “If you were Dallas though, would you take the No. 1 (pick) for Micah and a chance to pick Caleb Williams?” according to 105.3 Bobby Belt, a fan pal, inquired on the “Love of the Star” podcast. Some of the concerns addressed in this thinking experiment…
*Would the Bears make this contract knowing that Parsons is about to seek a $30 million APY? Isn’t Chicago the franchise that traded Roquon Smith to the Ravens because they refused to pay up?
*Would Chicago pass on Caleb Williams (or whichever QB they deemed worthy of the first pick) because they already have Justin Fields, a recent first-round quarterback? We know there’s talk of them trading Fields; will they replace Fields with Williams simply because Williams’ rookie contract is longer than Fields’?
*And the big one from Dallas’ perspective: Hoorah. You gave away the NFL’s finest defensive player for a quarterback you think will be “the next Patrick Mahomes” (that sounds good), but what about the other quarterback? You understand, Dak Prescott. Some believe Dallas would simply trade Prescott, but this would still result in a significant cap burden in the near future.
Bottom line: If your scouting staff convinces you that QB X is “the next Mahomes,” you will do whatever it takes to get him. Unfortunately, we believe Dallas personnel chief Will McClay can’t quite keep that promise… Leaving this.
