Another mock draft has Broncos taking a national championship QB

Momentum is building in a variety of mock drafts for the Denver Broncos to select a quarterback with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

It just makes sense.

Regardless of what GM George Paton and head coach Sean Payton said at their end-of-season press conferences, the team will almost certainly part ways with Russell Wilson this offseason.

The senior members of the Broncos brass can say “the door is open” for a comeback, but even fans at the Super Bowl don’t believe them. Matt Ryan, the former NFL MVP, told our own Andrew Mason this in Las Vegas.

Regardless, ESPN has criticized Michigan national champion quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s move to Denver before, and CBS Sports did the same on Thursday.

“McCarthy is a winner, and he is correct. Josh Edwards comments, “I can see Sean Payton falling in love with those qualities and bringing the national champion to the Rocky Mountains.”

McCarthy is definitely correct. He completed 72.3% of his throws for the Wolverines in 2023, leading them to a perfect 15-0 record and putting them at the top of the collegiate football world. McCarthy threw 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions this season. He is listed at 6-foot-3 and 197 pounds.

We’ve also seen Oregon quarterback Bo Nix mocked by the Broncos, and there has been some talk about Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. Landing Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels seemed to be a long chance, but according to the most recent CBS mock, they will be ranked first, second, and third overall. That appears to be the consensus.

There are still around 2.5 months until the NFL Draft, so plenty can happen, but McCarthy has some early momentum to finish up in Denver. He’d be the Broncos’ first first-round pick at quarterback since Paxton Lynch, so the expectations are low.
