The Green Bay Packers must be excited about what they saw in Jordan Love in 2023. So much so that it has already been reported that they plan to extend Love this offseason.
The Packers’ season ended in a devastating manner, but the future appears better than ever.
Following Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets, many expected the franchise to struggle in the NFL. In the end, the Packers stunned everyone by rising to the task and finishing as one of the NFC’s final four teams. Now they could be providing some significant assistance to Love and this offense.
The Green Bay Packers are expected to bolster Jordan Love’s offensive capabilities significantly.
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report explained how this could occur:
Saints get: 2024 first-round pick (No. 25 overall), 2024 third-round pick (No. 91 overall), and 2024 sixth-round pick (No. 203 overall).
Packers receive: 2024 first-round selection (14th overall)
As mentioned in the David Bakhtiari trade suggestion, the Packers have a significant need at left tackle this offseason. Bakhtiari has been an excellent player, but injuries have rendered him unreliable. While it is uncommon for the Packers to select an offensive player in the first round or trade up, the need at tackle may be an exception.
For many years, the Packers have had a strong offensive line. Bakhtairi’s play as a left tackle has frequently contributed to this.
Finding an answer in free agency will prove tough. The Packers would be better off using the draft to locate Love’s long-term blindside protector, albeit they may have to move up in the selection order to find him.
Making the jump from No. 25 to No. 14 would necessitate some draft cash, but the Packers have a nice supply. According to Tankathon’s power rankings, Green Bay possesses the fifth-best selection in this year’s draft.
That may be of particular interest to the New Orleans Saints. They are continually cutting things close to the cap and could use more players on rookie contracts. In addition, they do not currently have a third- or fourth-round pick.
This trade would result in a third-round pick while also placing the Packers in a better position to take a left tackle candidate in the middle of the first round than a few other tackle-needy clubs. Potential targets for such a deal include Kingsley Suamataia and Tyler Guyton.
Who Is Kingsley Suamataia?
Bleacher Report analyzed his game in depth. Suamataia is a two-year starter in BYU’s zone-based run system, which is RPO-heavy and balanced (52-48 run-pass split). In addition to his broad, thick physique and good arm length, he has large hands and an easy way of moving around.
Suamataia possesses excellent pass protection skills, with the ability to carry rushers up the arc to protect the corner. When he makes contact, he strikes and widens rushers with his inside hand before baiting them with his light outside hand.
He has the foundation to play on an island in the NFL because he drifts and oversets to create a soft inner shoulder, and he plays upright to gain rapid access to his frame versus speed and strength.
He has a legitimate shot at becoming a long-term starter in this league. Protecting Jordan Love’s blindside for years to come will be one of the Packers’ top priorities.
