We looked at which Charlton Athletic players are out of contract at the end of the season.
A new era is underway at Charlton Athletic following the appointment of Nathan Jones as manager.
The Addicks had been on the hunt for a manager following the sacking of Michael Appleton, who was dismissed last month after winning just eight of his 28 games in charge since replacing Dean Holden in September.
Jones had been out of work since leaving Southampton last February, and he inherits a tough situation at The Valley with the club sitting just outside the relegation zone in League One.
Despite their recent struggles, it was an impressive January transfer window for Charlton, and Jones will be hoping to get the best out of those new additions.
While Jones’ immediate priority will be on keeping his team out of trouble, he will have some tough decisions in the summer, with several members of his squad out of contract.
We looked at which Addicks players are in the final six months of their contracts and will leave as free agents.
Ward, a goalkeeper, signed a short-term contract with Charlton in January after being released by League Two side Swindon Town.
Ward was brought in to compete with Ashley Maynard-Brewer and Harry Isted, but he appears unlikely to see much action at The Valley, and it would be surprising if his contract was extended in the summer.
Michael Hector, a defender who joined The Valley from Fulham in January, was a significant signing for the Addicks, given his extensive Championship experience.
Hector has been a regular starter this season when fit, and as one of the club’s most reliable performances, Jones will undoubtedly want to keep him.
Terell Thomas
Thomas, who began his career with Charlton, returned for a second term in September 2022 after being released by Reading.
The Royals were allegedly interested in bringing Thomas back to the Select Car Leasing Stadium in January, as were Blackpool, therefore Jones may attempt to sign him to a contract extension.
Lucas Ness – Defender Ness joined the Addicks from the Metropolitan Police in August 2020, and following loan spells with Hampton & Richmond Borough and Torquay United, he has established himself in the first squad at The Valley.
However, Ness’ opportunities were restricted under Appleton, and his future at the club will be determined by whether he is part of Jones’ long-term plans.
Thierry Small joined The Valley from Southampton earlier this month and signed a contract until the end of the season. The club has the option to extend it for another year.
Small made only one senior game for the Saints, spending time on loan with Port Vale and St Mirren, and he will be looking to secure a long-term contract with Charlton.
George Dobson
Since joining Charlton from Sunderland in July 2021, midfielder Dobson has established himself as a fan favourite, and he was appointed captain in December 2022.
The Addicks would undoubtedly have wanted to keep Dobson, but as we exclusively revealed last month, the 26-year-old has signed terms on a pre-contract deal with Fehérvár FC, which will see him join the Hungarian first division side as a free agent in the summer.
