Winslow has been performing well in the G League.
The Toronto Raptors cleared two roster spaces by trading Dennis Schroder and Thad Young before waiving Spencer Dinwiddie. GM Bobby Webster intimated that the organization will look into every conceivable option, including the G League and overseas, to fill those two voids.
Instead of converting semi-regular backup Jontay Porter to a conventional NBA contract, Toronto has signed another of his Mississauga teammates. This guy has greater pedigree, as he is a former Miami Heat lottery pick, Justise Winslow.
Winslow joined with the 905 to give it one more shot in the NBA while hoping to stay. He has demonstrated that he is far too skilled to play the majority of his minutes in Mississauga. Toronto rewarded his return effort by giving him a brief opportunity to test his NBA skills.
The Raptors signed Winslow to a 10-day contract, which might be the first of several before they decide to retain him for the rest of the season. While this is not a long-term project, it is encouraging to see his hard effort rewarded with the opportunity to impress Darko Rajkovic.
Toronto also signed a second 10-day deal with power forward Mouhamadou Gueye, who has been a double-double machine in Mississauga. Gueye and Winslow will have opportunities to demonstrate their ability to stick with the Raptors, as the NBA coaching staff will be more focused on them for the remainder of the season.
Justise Winslow and Mouhamadou Gueye signed 10-day contracts with the Toronto Raptors.
Winslow was selected highly from Duke because of his versatility, athleticism, and defense. The difficulty was that he never developed a broad offensive skill set or a 3-point shooting. After Miami released him after four seasons, Winslow bounced about as a reserve with the Grizzlies, Clippers, and Trail Blazers.
In 13 regular-season games for Raptors 905, Winslow averaged 16.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game. While his jumper is still lacking, Winslow may accomplish enough to earn a non-guaranteed contract next season if Toronto is happy with his defense.
Gueye averages 14.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, with just over 2.0 blocks per game for the Raptors 905. After some good performances in Summer League with the Raptors, Gueye will need to demonstrate that he can be the next Chris Boucher success story as a slender rim-running big.
