DONE DEAL : Cowboys has announces the trade of new assistant defensive coordinator

The Cowboys are bringing in a few new faces to assist new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer strengthen the team’s defense even more.
Despite all of the fanfare around their 12-5 record and NFC East title, the Dallas Cowboys failed to deliver when it counted the most. They suffered a disappointing 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the NFL playoffs, and for a team that was supposed to have one of the league’s most stifling defensive units, allowing 48 points to a Jordan Love-led offense was not how they expected their season to end.

Thus, the Cowboys are seeking to improve their defensive performance by bringing in new faces to assist new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. To that end, the Cowboys are reportedly hiring former Washington Commanders defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina for the same position, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Poaching a coach from the Commanders appears to be a fair game, especially since former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left for the Washington head coaching position. Zgonina is an accomplished coach who has worked with the Houston Texans, the New York Giants, and the San Francisco 49ers.

On Friday, the Cowboys were able to confirm the final few members of their staff, including a few key hires to round out Mike Zimmer’s staff. In addition to hiring Jeff Zgonina as defensive line coach, Dallas hired Paul Guenther (with whom Zimmer has extensive experience) as run game coordinator, the Cowboys’ first hire in that role.

Guenther is coming in to help Zimmer strengthen a Cowboys defense that gave up a lot of rushing yards to the Packers in their playoff game. In addition to Guenther’s hiring, the Cowboys hired Greg Ellis as Jeff Zgonina’s defensive line assistant coach. Ellis is a former Cowboys player who played for Dallas from 1998 to 2008.
At the end of the day, Mike Zimmer does not need to revamp the Cowboys’ defense to ensure their success in 2024. All they need is some fine-tuning and superior matchup preparation come the postseason.
