Former Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is pondering a surprise move to League One strugglers Port Vale following his abrupt exit from Stoke City last month.
The 34-year-old was prolific in the Championship under Rafa Benitez, with 83 goals in 145 appearances, but his time at Stoke was disastrous.
After leaving Newcastle 18 months ago and joining Stoke on a free transfer, he only scored three goals in 50 games for the Potters, and has yet to score this season. His two-year contract was set to expire this summer, but he got it terminated early last month.
A few weeks later, Port Vale are seeking to lure the former Crystal Palace forward to Vale Park, with new manager Darren Moore eager to reunite with the player he worked with on loan at West Brom. Gayle scored 23 goals during the 2018/19 season, allowing Newcastle to sign Salomon Rondon.
Gayle is still in the Stoke area and is now without a club, so a move to Port Vale may make sense and come at the perfect time, even if it would be a significant drop down the divisions for the striker.
