Newcastle want “athletic” player with more assists than Bruno this season

As Newcastle United prepares for life without sports director Dan Ashworth, who has been placed on gardening leave due to links to Manchester United, the Magpies have already begun looking for summer reinforcements. This could involve a solution to their left-back issue.

Newcastle Transfer News

While many have praised Ashworth, it should be noted that Newcastle did not have the most successful summer transfer window last year, with Sandro Tonali being the finest illustration of that failure. The Magpies paid a reputed £55 million to sign the Italian from AC Milan, only to see him serve a 10-month suspension. Tonali has been cleared to return to training, but he will not be able to play competitively for Eddie Howe’s team anytime soon.

Their transfer failure has had an impact on the pitch, with Howe’s side having to balance a crowded game schedule, tumbling out of the Champions League and falling behind in the battle for European football in the Premier League as a result. As the next summer transfer window approaches, they will have the opportunity to make up for lost time, beginning with a Championship player

Leif Davis: Ipswich Town full-back says side must stay 'switched on' in defence - BBC Sport

According to Alex Crook’s transfer diary on talkSPORT, Newcastle want to buy Ipswich Town’s Leif Davis this summer. The left-back, along with his colleagues, has had a fantastic season in the Championship, leaving Kieran McKenna’s side in contention for promotion for the second year in a row.

The Magpies aren’t the only ones interested in Davis; West Ham United is also apparently tracking him ahead of the summer transfer window as they aim to replace Aaron Cresswell. As the two Premier League sides prepare to compete off the pitch, Howe will aim to see his team win the race and get an upgrade over Dan Burn at left back.

“Athletic” Davis is superior than Burn.

The enormity of what Newcastle requires to become a consistent top four Premier League team has been revealed for all to see this season, with more changes needed in Howe’s side. Burn down the left-hand side is one of the potential sacrifices. The tall full-back has struggled at times this season and could swiftly become second choice if someone of Davis’ caliber joins. Here’s how Davis’ and Burn’s stats have compared thus far this season.
