Southampton and Stoke City will have one eye on Charlton Athletic right now: View

Jones has struggled since taking over Charlton, with only one win and four draws, leaving them narrowly above the relegation zone.
Given his dismal record at past teams, Southampton and Stoke City fans will be intently watching his play.
Charlton face a vital phase in their effort to avoid relegation, with Jones under pressure to turn around his managerial career.

Nathan Jones has only won one of Charlton Athletic’s first six games since taking over in February, but he has managed to draw four of them, notably against promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth.

Charlton are presently 18th in League One, barely four points above the relegation zone, and Jones will be closely monitored by fans of Southampton and Stoke City in particular.

The Welsh manager was unable to keep the Saints, who were then in the Premier League, out of the relegation zone and was fired after only three months in charge.

He had a similar fate at Stoke, where he was fired in 2019 with the club second-bottom in the Championship.

Jones faces a difficult challenge if Charlton is to avoid relegation to the fourth level for the first time in their history.

However, few Southampton or Stoke fans would wish him well following a difficult few years in manager.

What went wrong for Jones at Southampton?
Jones joined Southampton from Luton in November 2022, after leading the Hatters to the Championship play-offs the previous season and winning Championship Manager of the Year.

Southampton were in freefall when Jones came over, and he did little to turn things around, managing only eight games and winning one.

He had a memorable victory in the Carabao Cup, knocking out Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and denying them the chance to win all four.

Jones was swiftly removed of his duties, and he had to watch as the Luton side he had constructed was promoted to the Premier League under Rob Edwards’ direction.

Jones fails to make use of the expensively built Stoke team
Stoke were still hurting from their relegation to the Championship when Jones took management in January 2019.

After a decade in the Premier League, Stoke were relegated after a series of costly mistakes in the transfer market precipitated a downward spiral from which they would never recover.

Jones took over midway through their first season back in the Championship, however he was unable to generate results with a group tipped for immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Jones was fired the following season after the club suffered its worst start in history, finishing second-bottom.
Charlton looked over their shoulders heading into the final ten games of the season.

Charlton are having their worst season to date, sitting just above the League One relegation zone.

Prior to Jones’ departure to South-East London, Charlton had gone 13 games without winning. Jones has done little to rekindle that winning spirit, but he has at least halted the rot with four draws in his first six games.

Charlton are nearing a critical few weeks in their effort to avoid relegation, as they face fellow relegation contenders Cheltenham Town, Carlisle United, and Fleetwood Town one after the other.

After a tumultuous few years in the dugout, Jones’ managing career is on the line.
