Dominic Iorfa, a Sheffield Wednesday defender, has stated that he is open to signing a new deal but is now focused on regaining his spot in the starting XI.
Sheffield Wednesday have had defender Iorfa on their books for nearly five years. He joined Wolves on a permanent basis in the winter of 2019 and has since played 154 games for the club.
The vast majority of his appearances have been in the Championship, but he was also a regular in League One. The 28-year-old has had phases when he was unstoppable, but there have also been more difficult periods when he was not in the starting lineup, whether due to favouritism or an injury.
Iorfa has recently returned to play, coming off the bench in the last two league games. His effect was also noticed last time out, as he assisted Ike Ugbo’s winner against Rotherham United.
His major contribution has sparked speculation about his future, but Iorfa isn’t too concerned.
According to The Star, the Sheffield Wednesday player stated that, while he would be delighted to extend his expiring contract, his primary goal is to return to Danny Rohl’s team permanently. He said:
“I’ve been out, so I’ve just been focusing on getting back in shape.” And I expect some conversations to take place in the coming months.
“The window is shut now, so hopefully it’s something that we’ll get sorted out – but yeah, my focus has just been on getting back fit so I can get back to form, back to my best, and just help the team stay up.”I’m extremely settled here; I’ve been here for a long time. So I know the club well and the fanbase, so if that occurs, I’d be delighted to stay. But we shall see.
“I’m back now, and my focus is getting back into the team, performing well, and then we’ll go from there.”
The struggle for a starting position
With Sheffield Wednesday in such fine form, breaking into the starting lineup may be easier said than done. Iorfa’s versatility to play as a centre-back or full-back will be beneficial, as will his performance against Rotherham United.
His return to availability surely gives Rohl food for thought as he attempts to orchestrate an unexpected victory at Hillsborough. Wednesday are still three points from safety and 23rd in the Championship table following their victory against the Millers, but they have now won three in a row and four of their past five games.
Iorfa is determined to play a prominent role in the survival bid, but only time will tell how much action he receives amid the fierce push for
