The Colorado Avalanche have signed one of the game’s greats, Ivan Ivan. The 21-year-old’s contribution to one of the NHL’s finest teams on the ice is uncertain, but what he brings to the roster on paper is one of the best names in hockey history.
The Czech forward first gained the attention of hockey fans during the 2022 World Junior Championships. A rumor and a graphic suggested that his middle name was also Ivan, making him Ivan Ivan Ivan. While it appears that other sections of the internet have disproved triple Ivan, double Ivan is also quite great.
“My parents loved me and wanted me to be special,” Ivan previously stated. “I want to be special for hockey not just my name.”
All of the other great names in hockey history will undoubtedly be gazing over their shoulders as Ivan Ivan strives for a career to match his renowned moniker. Look out for Ziggy Palffy, Garth Snow, Ulf Samuelsson, Dick Duff, Terry Sawchuk, Larry Playfair, Jordin Tootoo, Garth Butcher, Radek Bonk, Bill Quackenbush, Tony Twist, Jonathan Quick, Red Savage, Jimmy Snuggerud, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Yegor Yegorov, Marcel Marcel, Kaapo Kakko, Ron Tugnutt, Per Djoos, and Jonathan Cheechoo.
Ivan spent 2023-24 with the Colorado Eagles, the Avalanche’s American Hockey League club. He has 12 goals and 15 assists in 51 games, which leads all Eagles rookies in goals, assists, points, and multi-point games. He joins the NHL on a two-year contract.
Prior to coming to Colorado, he had 177 points in 191 games with the Cape Breton Eagles of the QMJHL from 2019-23. He also made an appearance representing his country in 2022.
With the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday, Ivan could provide valuable depth for the Avs throughout the team’s stretch push. The most important news for the team right now may be that another well-known forward is almost ready to return to the squad.
