Trae Young told NBA reporter Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report that he does not want to be dealt by the Atlanta Hawks.
Young hopes to win a championship in Atlanta.
According to NBA reporter Howard Beck of The Ringer, the Hawks contemplated trading Young to the San Antonio Spurs before this year’s trade deadline.
Young agreed to a five-year, $215 million agreement with the Hawks in August 2021. He will earn $43 million next season and $45 million in 2025-26.
This season, Young has averaged 26.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks while shooting 42.6% from the field, 37.1% from beyond the arc, and 85.6% from the free throw line. He has 35 double-doubles in 51 starts.
Young, a three-time All-Star, is presently out of action due to finger surgery. An MRI indicated a tear in the radial collateral ligament of the Oklahoma product’s left pinkie, necessitating surgery.
NBA expert Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer says the Hawks are “highly likely” to trade Young after the season. Young’s contract lacks a no-trade clause, so if Atlanta decides to deal him, he has no say in where he ends up.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Hawks “know” they need to deal either Young or Dejounte Murray this summer. Rich Paul, of Klutch Sports Group, represents both All-Stars.
The Los Angeles Lakers will be extensively linked to Young since he shares an agency with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Young, 25, has a career average of 25.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.2 blocks. He is one of the NBA’s top offensive point guards.
The Hawks are 10th in the East, with a 27-34 record. It’s unclear whether Young will play again this season. He is due to be re-evaluated in four weeks.
