Charlton Athletic of League One has signed Connor Wickham, a former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United forward.
The 30-year-old has been training with the Addicks as a free agent since leaving Cardiff City at the end of the 2022/23 season. He has now signed a short-term contract with the Addicks, which will last until the end of April.
He will work for Charlton manager Nathan Jones, who took over at The Valley last month following Michael Appleton’s dismissal. Jones has admirably halted the rot, and the Addicks have not suffered a defeat in the third tier in almost a month.
Jones stated, “Connor’s been here for a couple of weeks, and we like the human being, so that’s the beginning. His experience, physicality, and quality make him an excellent signing. We’re glad to have him here, and it will be intriguing to see how much we can pull out of him.”
Wickham continued, “I’m thrilled to be here. It’s a nice opportunity for me to work with a strong bunch of guys and a good management in the latter part of the season, so I’m looking forward to it. Results have recently improved, and there will be a strong push until the end of the season.”
The experienced forward has had three loan spells at Wednesday, the most recent being in the 2019/20 season. Earlier in his career, when trying to establish himself at Crystal Palace, he spent time on loan at Leeds United in West Yorkshire.
He has been given the number 13 shirt at The Valley.
