Newcastle United are currently being held back by profit and sustainability, which Gary Neville believes is incorrect.
The Magpies were unable to spend during the January transfer window, with selling players seen the sole option for possible reinforcements. There was talk of Miguel Almiron, Kieran Trippier, and Callum Wilson departing, but all three remained at St James’ Park.
There is also discussion that Newcastle has to cash in on one of their main stars to aid with profit and sustainability, which has raised questions over Bruno Guimaraes’ future. There are also concerns about Alexander Isak, the Magpies’ most expensive player ever.
Despite their affluence, Newcastle’s owners are not allowed to spend as much money as other clubs have. We saw that with Chelsea and Manchester City when they changed ownership, but now the Premier League is putting an end to it.
The criteria are tightening, making it even more difficult for Newcastle to progress to the next level and consistently compete at the top.
And Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville believes Eddie Howe’s team should be permitted to spend more money than they already do.

Neville discussed Newcastle’s financial problems on The Overlap’s newest fan debate on YouTube, and believes that the Premier League’s rules need to change
“I do think that if you want to try and punch up like Newcastle obviously do, with their ownership, Newcastle in my opinion should be able to spend the same money as Man City and Arsenal and Man United and Liverpool, because their owner funding model should allow them to,” he went on to say.
“Newcastle, at the moment, and I believe this is incorrect, can never naturally achieve the levels of Manchester United or Manchester City, and the restrictions are tightening. You’d have to build your stadium to accommodate 100,000 people.
“It’s simply mad. “I think the rules should be changed.”
Newcastle United will struggle to reach the top of the Premier League under existing financial regulations.
As Neville points out, Newcastle will never reach the level of the best teams under the existing rules. That is incorrect; the Premier League should not be a closed business. Clubs should have the opportunity to improve and challenge the status quo, as Newcastle and Aston Villa have done in recent years.
Profit and sustainability appear to be major issues throughout the Premier League, and the rules are clearly not suitable for purpose. They substantially impede clubs with lower revenue, even if their owners have the means to spend more.
While clubs should not be able to buy their way into victory, there must be a more level playing field. There isn’t right now, and it’s severely limiting Newcastle United’s chances of progressing.
