Leeds United are unlikely to offer a new contract to fantastic star and he could be sold this summer

According to Phil Hay, Leeds United are unlikely to offer Junior Firpo a new contract and could sell him this summer.

The journalist writes on The Athletic website (12 March) that despite his strong form this season, the former Barcelona player is unlikely to be offered new terms on his present deal, which expires in 2025.
As a result, transfer offers are expected to be well accepted, and the Whites will try to bolster the position during the summer transfer window.

“With a year left on Firpo’s contract, it seems unlikely that a renewal will be on the table,” he stated in an email.

“If Leeds are to make progress and rebuild as a Premier League club this summer, left-back is a position that will need strengthening, so offers for Firpo would be well received.”

Leeds United must be smart in the transfer window
Usually at this stage of the season with the way Leeds have played, you would be quite confident that the club are going to earn automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
But with the way Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have also been playing there are simply no guarantees and Leeds have to stay focused on the task at hand.

However, it does mean that the club’s summer transfer plans can’t be put into action just yet either as they don’t know what is going to be happening beyond this season.

With Firpo’s contract status what it is, the club must make a decision regardless of where the squad will play its games, and a sale seems to make the most sense.

Targets to replace him will differ depending on the division, but Firpo’s pursuers are unlikely to change, and the team can plan accordingly. It’s the right decision, but they need to be strategic about it.
