Alan Shearer makes himself clear to Newcastle owners on location of emotive FFP stadium solution

Alan Shearer has stated that if Newcastle United decides to build a new stadium, it must be located ‘next door’ to St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s hierarchy is now waiting for the results of the club’s stadium feasibility study, which was commissioned last year. A number of international leaders in the field have looked at St James’ to see what is architecturally achievable on the complex city centre site, as well as what this would entail in terms of capacity and revenue.

Those at the top of the club would prefer to stay at St James’ if expansion is possible, but if it is not possible, CEO Darren Eales has previously promised to ask supporters what they want to do, whether it is’staying capped’ at the existing capacity or ‘searching for alternatives’. Regardless of the outcome, Shearer believes the stadium’s ‘proximity’ is’really significant with it being in town’.

“One of the best things about St James’ Park is its position,” the club’s all-time top scorer told the Rest is Football podcast when asked about the emotional balance between the stadium’s history and the prospect of a larger facility. “It’s so close to the city center that if they were to extend it, that would be wonderful, but if they were to build a new one, it would have to be next door or very close because that’s why we have such a good vibe. It’s so iconic! And it’s in the city center, so if it’s going to be a new stadium, it ought to be right next door or not far away.
