As free agency enters its second wave, the Kansas City Chiefs could look to former No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick Carson Wentz to serve as Patrick Mahomes’ backup.
Wentz, who was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 NFL Draft, played a key role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl run during a spectacular 2017 season, but injuries and inconsistency have plagued the 31-year-old’s career in recent years.
Still, CBS Sports feels Wentz might be a perfect backup for Patrick Mahomes as the Kansas City Chiefs look to become the first franchise to win three straight Super Bowls in 2024.
“One of the best backups left,” writes CBS’ Cody Benjamin. “Wentz demonstrated his playmaking ability during a brief time as Matthew Stafford’s No. 2 down the stretch in 2023. Kansas City, meanwhile, has a vacuum behind Patrick Mahomes after Blaine Gabbert went on the market, and the Chiefs reportedly looked into the former Philadelphia Eagles star a year ago.”
Wentz has struggled in previous seasons in Philadelphia and Indianapolis, alienating teammates on the field and in the locker room, and was forced to take on a backup role with the Los Angeles Rams after being abruptly dismissed by the Washington Commanders.
Why Carson Wentz Could Fit with the Kansas City Chiefs
Wentz played the greatest football of his career in his second NFL season under former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, a solid member of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s coaching tree.
During his career in Philadelphia, Wentz completed 62.7 percent of his throws for 16,811 yards, 113 touchdowns and 50 interceptions.
However, there is still a risk with Wentz because to injuries, ineffectiveness, and the fact that he has not received glowing reviews from his time near the conclusion of his career in Philadelphia and Washington.
