Long Island’s Jack Coan signs with CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League have announced that former Sayville and Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan has signed a deal with them.
Following his record-breaking season at Notre Dame in 2021, Coan signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He went to camp with the Colts before starting for the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas last spring.
As a rookie, Coan threw for 1,471 yards and six touchdowns as San Antonio ended 3-7, just missing the playoffs.
Saskatchewan went 6-12 during the fall season, finishing fourth in the CFL’s West Division. The squad last won both the Grey Cup and the CFL championship in 2013.
Training camp for the 2024 CFL season begins in May.
Coan is the 15th Notre Dame alumnus to join with Saskatchewan. Former Notre Dame quarterbacks Tom Clements, Tony Rice, and Frank Tripucka all played for the Roughriders. In his only season with the Fighting Irish in 2021, Coan led the squad to an 11-2 record.
In Notre Dame’s 37-35 Fiesta Bowl defeat to Oklahoma State on New Year’s Day, Coan set Fiesta Bowl records for throwing yards (509) and passing touchdowns (5).
The Roughriders play at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, which is about a two-hour drive north of the US-Canada border in Montana and little over 2,000 miles from Sayville High School.
In addition to his time in the XFL and a pre-season camp with the Colts, Coan has tried out for other NFL teams in the last two years.
Prior to his one season as a graduate student at Notre Dame, Coan played three years at Wisconsin and received a bachelor’s degree. In 2016, Coan was unanimously named the Hansen Award winner for Suffolk County’s top football player while playing for Sayville.
