Carlos Corberan and Shilen Patel send messages to West Brom supporters after Watford drama

West Brom’s chiefs have gone to social media following the Baggies’ 2-2 draw with Watford.
West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan and owner Shilen Patel have both delivered messages to fans following the Baggies’ dramatic draw against Watford on Easter Monday.

Albion fell behind 2-0 after 66 minutes at The Hawthorns, with second-half goals from Edo Kayembe and Mileta Rajovic putting the Hornets on course for their second win in three games under interim manager Tom Cleverley, but they fought back.

Brandon Thomas-Asante cut Watford’s lead in half with 20 minutes remaining, and Darnell Furlong equalised in the 91st minute to ensure a draw.

Furlong’s stoppage-time strike extended the Baggies’ recent unbeaten streak to eight games, putting them in command of the play-off race – fifth, eight points ahead of seventh with six games remaining – but four draws in that run may be cause for concern for supporters.

Following Monday’s thrilling conclusion at The Hawthorns, Corberan and Patel, West Brom’s new American owner, took to X to deliver a message to fans.

Periodisation, personal meetings and a ketchup ban: Behind the scenes at West Brom
The Spanish coach praised his team’s mental fortitude in fighting back from two goals behind and thanked the crowd for their support against the Hornets.

A unified West Brom can only be good news for their promotion hopes

While Patel agreed it was a “pretty frustrating afternoon” for Albion, he acknowledged the team’s fighting spirit and argued that it will be critical to their future in the second division.
The pair are correct in highlighting Albion’s determination and mentality, which bode well for the play-offs.

Watford has a stronger roster than their league position suggests, and they are improving under Cleverley, so a 2-2 draw is far from awful.

The Baggies have not been at the level of the Championship’s top four this season and never genuinely appeared part of the automatic promotion chase, but they have been the best of the rest.

Much of the season was spent with off-field difficulties with their old owner rumbling on, but following Patel’s takeover, they are a club that is unified.

That can only be good news for them, since it means that even if they don’t get promoted this term, they should be able to do so again in 2024/25.

April is shaping up to be a hectic month in the Championship, with West Brom having five games remaining, beginning on Saturday against Stoke City.

They will want to return to winning ways as soon as possible in order to ensure a top-six finish and generate momentum for the play-offs next month.
