Sarmiento took to social media quickly after the thrilling match between the two promotion contenders.
Ipswich Town midfielder Jeremy Sarmiento praised his team’s persistence in a post on X following their 3-2 victory over Southampton.
The Tractor Boys were eager for a win going into this game, as Leicester City had won earlier in the day and Leeds United would play immediately after the game in Suffolk ended.
And they got off to the greatest possible start, with Leif Davis scoring to give the home team a 1-0 lead at Portman Road.
However, the Saints responded fast, with Che Adams equalising shortly after.
Unlike the Tractor Boys, the visitors were able to capitalise on their lead, going 2-1 up and exploiting Ipswich’s defensive flaws down the left flank.
Kieran McKenna’s side responded well in the second half, with Nathan Broadhead equalising.
Davis appeared to be on his way to goal late in the game, but James Bree pushed him back and was sent off for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity, according to the referee.
Despite this punishment, the Saints continued to press forward, but it proved costly in the end, with Sarmiento scoring in the 97th minute to effectively kill the away side’s automatic promotion chances.
Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys are currently leading the Championship table and are well-positioned to continue their progress.
There is still time for Leeds and Leicester to catch up, with the latter having a game in hand, but McKenna’s side is continuing to score points, which can only be a good thing.
Jeremy Sarmiento’s Ipswich Town message following Southampton’s win
Nobody will be happier than Sarmiento, who replaced Conor Chaplin in the closing moments of the game and scored a critical goal for the promotion candidates.
Ipswich appear to have a flair for scoring late, crucial goals, and that
Ipswich Town have a promising trait that could earn them promotion
Could help them get back-to-back promotions.
Given this tendency, it’s no wonder that Sarmiento wrote on X, “WE NEVER GIVE UP!”
As previously indicated, Ipswich continue to score late goals.
If the Tractor Boys do not win a game in the final phases, this can provide a significant psychological edge.
It can also instill dread in their opponents, who will understand that McKenna’s team will not give up and can strike at any time.
It’s a fantastic attribute to have, and it will be extremely useful in their battle against Leeds and Leicester, both of which arguably have superior squads and are more set to compete for promotion.
McKenna’s team is finding ways to win games, and after a setback earlier this year, they are firmly back on track and are genuine contenders for a top-two spot currently.
Ipswich fans and neutrals will be aiming for automatic promotion.
