Charlton boss Nathan Jones explains how he will address Addicks defensive woes following 2-2 draw with Wigan

Nathan Jones, Charlton Athletic’s manager, cautions that the club’s defence may need to be refreshed this summer.

The Addicks have the sixth-worst defensive record in League One this season, allowing 62 goals at an average of 1.44 per game.

Only demoted Carlisle United (3) has preserved fewer clean sheets than Charlton’s five this season.

They were broken twice in four minutes by Wigan Athletic at The Valley on Tuesday evening, resulting in a collapse that saw them go from commanding the game to having to come back for a point.

When asked how the Addicks’ difficulties in the back can be rectified after so many years, Jones replied, “It’s either work or personnel.” We’ll do a lot of work, so if

If the work does not meet expectations, we will replace the employees. “That is all we will do.”We have to be better. We lost a couple small individual engagements before they turned on us. The two goals and counter-attacks hurt us twice. They play in a specific style. “They gambled and were not punished.”We’ve generated enough to punish them tonight. Nobody would be complaining if it had been 4 or 5-2. Nobody is arguing you were fortunate because we provided numerous opportunities. However, if they are not put away, the game becomes 2-2, which was not the case.

“We haven’t had many clean sheets this year. This team has not kept many clean sheets. There have been three managers now, and no one has kept clean sheets, including myself. That is an issue that we must confront and improve upon. I do not want to have to score three goals at home to win a football game. In terms of intensity, I am really satisfied with everything we did.

“So many aspects of the game were amazing. We merely needed to improve on a few more areas. Our discussion rate was 20 shots today. And making sure we don’t concede two bad goals.”
