Iowa is confident that it can put together another solid season under head coach Kirk Ferentz. It was a productive spring for the crew as they returned to work. The offensive focused on learning a new system under Tim Lester. In terms of defense, it is critical to maintain the standard of excellence established by Phil Parker.
Spring practice is ended, and there are rumors that some players may continue to move up the depth chart. There are also a few compositions that highlight their talent. It may not be their time now, but it will be in the near future. Here are three players I’ll be keeping an especially close eye on.
WR Jarriett Buie– Aside from more quarterback depth, Iowa’s biggest need is playmakers. Buie has the potential to carve himself a position in an offense that lacks veteran wide receivers. Kaleb Brown and Kaden Wetjen are likely to be the top two options, but Buie has the potential to break out at the X position. He has a point. tremendous physicality and does not back down against large defensive backs. He can go up and convert 50/50 balls into 70/30. With Jacob Bostick leaving the program, Buie’s position will only improve. He has an opportunity to make up additional distance this summer and fall. Kamari Moulton – This one may surprise some considering Iowa returns Kaleb Johnson, LeShon Williams, and Jaziun Patterson, but it’s difficult not to be excited by Moulton’s performance last season in limited action. He concluded the season with 93 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Moulton had a couple of spectacular plays during Iowa’s open spring practice, including an outstanding back cut that resulted in a 20-yard touchdown.
Despite his height of 5-foot-9, Moulton has excellent vision and never loses sight of his skill set. He has the potential to flourish within Lester’s scheme and become a weapon. It’s a crowded running back room, but as we witnessed last season, having too many backs is never a terrible idea.
“(Coach Lester) has different ways that we’re running the ball,” that’s what he said. “I prefer it more. It gives us additional choices. There are plenty more things we can accomplish with the run game.” “We are absolutely leveling the playing field; the defense has no idea what we are doing anymore. “We have a level playing field.”
DB John Nestor – It was a difficult decision between linebacker Karson Sharar and Nestor, but the Illinois native has delivered over the last year. Nestor has been a ball-hawk when he first arrived on campus. He has excellent football sense and has continued to gain muscle. Nestor has good speed and will be someone to keep an eye on. Nestor will have to battle with T.J Hall and Deshaun Lee to replace Cooper DeJean, but he is a rising star.
“I’m hoping for more of a role at corner,” Nestor stated this spring. “I work for it every day. We just got an opportunity at the end of the day—me and a number of other men. Whoever earned it,
We’re all working hard every day. “We will see what happens.”
