Ike Ugbo sent an emotional message to Sheffield Wednesday following the end of his loan stay.
Ike Ugbo had five relatively unsuccessful experiences in England before joining Sheffield Wednesday.
The striker began his career at Chelsea, but did not make an appearance before being loaned out to Barnsley, MK Dons, and Scunthorpe United, where he scored five goals in 51 games.
Ugbo also spent a brief loan spell with Cardiff City in the early half of the 2023/24 season, scoring four goals before returning to Troyes prematurely.
The Canada international then joined Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the year and hasn’t looked back, scoring eight goals in 18 games and helping the club stay in the Championship.
Ike Ugbo ‘will never forget’ his loan spell
Ugbo has turned to Instagram to address the club and its fans as he prepares to return to France.
He tweeted, “To all SWFC fans, employees, and teammates. I appreciate the valuable experience you have provided me this season. When I initially joined the club in January, I was aware of the uphill battle ahead of us, but I knew from the start that the club’s unity would carry us through.
From the belief from the manager, to the constant support from the fans, we managed to get the job done. “Even though it’s only been a few months, the journey we’ve been on together has been one I will never forget.
“Thank you, Owls.” Could Sheffield Wednesday sign him permanently?
While there has been talk of Sheffield Wednesday pushing to sign Ike Ugbo permanently, the forward’s message sounds like one of accepting his chapter here is closed.
Though that isn’t necessarily the case if the Owls were to launch a bid for him, and he is hardly going to be publishing all over social media how badly he wants to stay at Hillsborough.
Ugbo still has two years left on his contract at Troyes, and the French club could look to take advantage of his impressive campaign in the Championship.
His worth may fall as he enters the final year of his contract next summer, thus it is more likely that they will sell him for a reasonable price in the coming months.
According to transfermarkt, Ugbo’s market value is presently £2.4 million, although that figure is expected to rise if he receives a lot of interest.
It would be a major statement if Wednesday were willing to cough up, but that decision will be determined by Dejphon Chansiri’s ability to back Danny Rohl as planned.
