Wolves will let Mason Rees depart because his path to the first team is hampered by two Man City signings, according to Football Insider.
Gary O’Neil’s team signed City midfielders Tommy Doyle, 22, and Matthew Whittingham, 19, last summer, with the former just securing a permanent deal following his loan term. Rees, 18, had previously been seen as a promising young player after signing a fresh contract only nine months prior.
However, the newcomers have slammed the door to first-team opportunities in midfield.
With only one year left on his contract at Molineux, Wolves will free him to find a new club this summer.
Wolves tell Mason Rees to quit Molineux amid Manchester City talks.
Rees made 11 Premier League 2 appearances for the under-21s this season, as well as five for the under-18s, until coaches decided he was no longer required.
Doyle, 22, and Whittingham, 19, have been hailed as rising stars in the Wolves’ ranks, with Doyle appearing 25 times in the Premier League this season.
He soon established himself as a vital player in O’Neil’s squad, adding to the first-team options in midfield.
Whittingham, however, is yet to make his first senior appearance for the club, but has two goals and one assist in 14 Premier League 2 games for the Under-21s.
Given the financial circumstances at Molineux, Football Insider reported that Wolves will be obliged to sell many players this summer, with Rees among them.
In other news, West Ham are expected to sign many Wolves players.
