According to Fabrizio Romano last month, the Rossoneri are expected to replace Pioli at the end of the season, with the Italian tactician’s future still uncertain as the campaign comes to a close. Milan has had an underwhelming year, which has played a significant role in the club’s potential decision, with a new cycle possibly beginning this summer.
While numerous names have been linked to the post in recent weeks, Antonio Vitiello now writes that Van Bommel’s name is getting traction as a serious alternative for Milan, while Paulo Fonseca is also significantly involved in discussions at this level.
Van Bommel, 47, played for Milan from 2011 to 2012, establishing himself as a crucial role in our midfield as we won the Scudetto during his tenure at San Siro.
That followed successful stints at PSV, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, and he has carried those skills and knowledge into his coaching career after enjoying success with Royal Antwerp.
The Dutchman also had a successful coaching stint at PSV, although it was followed by a dismal spell at Wolfsburg. He has shown promise on the bench, however, and appears to have gained the attention of Milan’s management team.
It’s disputed whether he’s experienced enough or accomplished enough in his career thus far to warrant such a significant move up for the Milan job, but it’s a decision that the club will make, and hopefully it proves to be the right one for us moving forward.

A new coach is not expected to be named until after the season, so it will be an interesting period to see who emerges as the most realistic option, with several names already being touted as the top contender, with Van Bommel being the most recent to move up the speculative list.
