BREAKING NEWS: Barnsley are now close to announcing a 50-year-old as their next manager. view

Barnsley have cooled their interest in MK Dons manager Mike Williamson and are expected to appoint Daniel Stendel for a second time at Oakwell.

The Tykes, who signed Dons’ Conor Grant on loan in the second half of the season, fired Neill Collins nearly a month ago, just before their League One play-off campaign against Bolton Wanderers.
But after failing to sign Austrian target Dominik Thalhammer owing to work permit concerns, the Yorkshire club had to look for an alternative, with Williamson allegedly on the list.

In the meantime, Barnsley have had former Dons loanee Martin Devaney in command, but they fell short against the Trotters and will remain in League One next season.

German Stendel is expected to return to Oakwell for a second term in command, having led the club to promotion to the Championship in 2018/19 before being fired early the following season.

After spells at Hearts and Nancy following his Barnsley exit, Stendel went to Hannover 96, where he finished his playing career as manager of the reserve team, but now appears poised to return to Yorkshire.
